My best journaling technique is simple. It took a long time to refine. I’ve had so many different methods. I like to think they all worked because they helped me explore and experiment, but what I’ve settled on i really like.
- Word of the day
- 2 sentences
- Optional drawing
Detailed:
- Word of the day
What I love about this is that it simplifies my whole message / thought / feeling. It’s easy to remember and reference during the day. This can be a word or two or phrase maximum. - 2 sentences
What I love about this is that it makes the journaling task too easy to avoid, yet also, it creates an intentionality with my words because of the constraint. The two sentences feel more like a poem, constructed eloquently to capture the grandeur of my thoughts and emotions and feelings. - Optional drawing
This sometimes is my favorite part. It’s optional because it can be time consuming, but it’s so fun to translate the message from my words into a drawing. The best is when you have access to color. I like using colored pencils. I find the drawings are a bit hit or miss, but the ones I like really help lock in an emotion and message, and I’m proud of and love for years to come.
